A person known as “the drug llama” was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for distributing fentanyl in all of the united states using a dark net market.
According to the U.S. Attorney office for the southern district of illinois, the prosecution commenced in january 2019 when a indictment was filed against brandon arias, 34, and his co-conspirator, melissa scanlan, 32 aka “the drug llama”.
The superseding indictment charged arias with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, illegally distributing fentanyl (5 counts), selling counterfeit tablets and misbranding drugs.
He pleaded responsible to all 8 charges back in july.
Melissa Scanlan pleaded pleaded guilty to her role in the conspiracy, in addition to her participation in a global money laundering conspiracy and a separate matter of assisting the distribution of fentanyl resulting in death of a man.
She is scheduled to be sentenced on february 10, 2020. Each arias and scanlan have been in federal custody since their arrest in early 2019.
Consistent with court filings, arias and scanlan created an account on “dream marketplace,” a dark net market in which users buy and sell unlawful materials and services, in which they offered sizeable portions of narcotics under the username“the drug llama.”
According to the office of the U.S. Attorney, the pair ran the operation from their hometown of san diego, california. During their nearly two-year run, arias was actively involved in scanlan’s distribution of more than 1,000 fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl pills every week.
They raked in more than $100k from their darknet drug trafficking and split the profits evenly.
The case was part of months long coordinated country wide operation involving the FDA Office of Criminal Investigations, the DEA, the usa postal and inspection service, u. S. Customs and border protection (CBP), the u. S. attorney’s office for the southern district of california and the u. S. Attorney’s office for the southern district of illinois.
