A Camino man pleaded guilty Monday to buying and selling drugs that led to the death of a 16-year-old boy in El Dorado County, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Elijah Richter used the dark web and the Silk Road website in September 2012 to buy hallucinogenic drugs from Europe including 25I-NBOMe, according to a news release. The drug – also known as “smiles” or an “N-Bomb” – has effects similar to LSD.

Richter, 28, then sold some of that drug to another man named Jesse Roberts, who then sold some to a 16-year-old boy, according to the release.

The boy took four doses and later died of an overdose at a Placerville hospital, The Sacramento Bee reported in 2017.

A search of Richter’s home unveiled digital scales, 2.61 grams of Ecstasy, 3.81 grams of suspected hash oil, 42.25 grams of marijuana and 96 tablets of 25I-NBOMe, the attorney’s office said. He was arrested and admitted to supplying the drugs.

Richter, who was indicted in 2017, faces a minimum of 20 years in prison, but could receive a life sentence and a $10 million fine.

Richter is due back in court for sentencing on April 27.

Jesse Roberts was convicted of involuntary manslaughter by the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office in 2017 and is serving a six-year prison sentence.
